40 Weeks & No Baby Drop: Options Before Induction

Question
I will be 40 weeks tomorrow but my baby has not dropped, my cervix is unchanged and my doctor has scheduled an induction for this coming Wednesday.  I do not agree with this action as I will ONLY be 40 weeks.  What can I do to get labor going and this process along WITHOUT an induction?

Answer
First of all, you can refuse the induction if you don't agree with it. It is your body and the doctor cannot do it without your consent. Channel the frustration you feel into confidence and tell your doctor. Call the hospital, call the doctor's office and cancel it- you are full within your rights to do this if you wish to do so.  You need to make your wishes known! =) Some doctors just assume their patients don't really care if they are induced or not. Bring up your concerns and be firm with your doctor.

It sounds like your baby just isn't ready to come out yet. Honestly, even an induction doesn't work when the baby isn't ready- in many cases it results in a cesarean section. There are some things you can do, however, to naturally nudge the baby in the direction of delivery. =)

* Nipple stimulation- manually or with showers, this is a good way to get things going
* Sexual intercourse- semen helps ripen the cervix, orgasm helps dilate the cervix
* Relaxation and visualization- spend some time each day imagining yourself going into labor. The mind can really help prepare your body for childbirth.
* Eating some foods, like pineapple and curry, can also naturally help nudge the body towards labor.
* Exercise - Don't overdo it, of course, but physical movement can help a baby engage and start labor

You may want to look in your area to see if there is a doula or midwife nearby that can assist you. In addition, a chiropractor, massage therapist, or acupuncturist may be able to help you as well.

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes and good luck!
Helen =)
