Rhodium Plating Wear on Rings: Restoration & Repair
QuestionHello! I have a chocolate diamond ring and a blue diamond ring. When new, both had black rhodium on the prongs. Now, every bit of the black has disappeared from the settings, revealing the yellow gold tips of the prongs. This has made the rings look completely different, and not in a good way. What stands out now are the multitude of little yellow gold dots and not the beautiful shades of the diamonds. Is there any way to reapply the black finish/rhodium to the prongs? I took them to my jewelery and he didn't have a clue what to do. The rings have lost their true beauty and not nearly as striking now that the black has worn off of the prongs. Thank you for your help and advice!
AnswerHI MARILYN,
I HAVE NO IDEA WHY YOUR JEWELER SAID HE COULD NOT FIX IT. TRY A BETTER JEWELER. BLACK ON GOLD CAN BE FIXED IN MAY WAYS. HE SHOULD KNOW AT EAST ONE OF THEM. RHODIUM IS APPLIED AS A PLATING. THERE IS ALSO BLACK ANTIQUING AND OTHER WAYS TO MAKE GOLD BLACK. IT IS NOT VERY EXPENSIVE AND EASILY DONE.
GOOD LUCK
