Gold Karat & Allergies: Understanding Jewelry Markings and Potential Reactions

Question
I purchased a gold and ruby ring from Mervyns. I had it sized and started to wear it. I got a big round rash on my finger. not around the finger just the top where the stone sits. The stone does not touch the skin. I am alergic to metals and only buy gold. I have never had a problem in 40 years. I was told that stores like Mervyns can sell gold as low as 11kt and still be advertized as 14kt by a jeweler. Is that true or is the jewler trying to get my business?  PS Mervyns would not refund or exchange since I had it sized! I refuse to shop there now.

Answer
The rash may be caused by water sitting between the top of the ring and your finger if underside of the ring is solid and wider this can happen. I do not know Mervyns, however, the jeweler who told you that needs to have proof prior to making statements and defaming the character of another store. It does no justice for any jeweler to "bad mouth" other jewelers. If in fact this "Mervyns" is selling UNDERKARATED jewelry, they are in violation of US consumer and manufacturer laws and can be shut down. If you really feel this is true, I would advise you to have the ring checked by a reputable jeweler and send it for assay report. Another good source for this would be the Jewelers Vigilance Committee.
