Blue Stone Identification: Is It a Sapphire? - Expert Analysis

Question

The Blue Stone
QUESTION: Hi, my team found a very big blue stone in Borneo, Indonesia recently. It is about a baby head in size (4kg). Is it a blue sapphire? We want to sell it but don't know the proper price for it. Please comment.

ANSWER: Hi,

Sapphires found in the rough do not usually look like this.
To me this looks like it has air bubbles in the stone.  This would indicate something like glass.  However for me to judge this from a picture is not 100%  I would suggest you get a refractive index run on the stone.  This would confirm what it is.  If it were real it would be priceless.  A true one of a kind.

Good luck on your find.

QUESTION: Greetings, Mr. Covey,
Following up my question about that big blue stone, since we don't know any expert in our small town to examine it I have to ask you more on this (regarding your comment that the air bubbles in it indicates something like glass): what kind of glass has blue color?  We are very curious since we have never found any stone like this before.
We are awaiting for your answer. Thank you very much.

Answer
Hello again,

What I am saying is from a picture I can not make a good assessment. I do not see any crystaline structure to the stone either.  To know for sure it needs to have the refractive index read.  As fas as color of glass it can be made in any color.  I know a gemologist here if you want to send it to have it tested.

I hope this helps you.
