Understanding Gold Ring Markings: 14K & .47 SMS
Questioni am very interested in purchasing a ring for my wife and on the inside of the band it is stamped 14k and also .47 sms im pretty sure the 14k means the quality of the gold but im lost on the .47 sms logo i was wondering if you could help me out with this before i purchase this jewelry??? thank you so much and god bless!
AnswerDear Joshua,
You are correct on the 14k marking. That is one of the Federally accepted stamps for 14 karat gold. As for the other marks, is it quite likely the letters are the maker's mark, since that is also required to be stamped when the karat is stamped. I have no way to identify the sms further. As for the number mark of .47, this might be a carat weight of a stone(or stones) but is not a regulated marking since stones may be taken in and out of some mountings and are sometimes difficult to verify while mounted unless only estimated.
The best way to determine if the .47 has anything to do with stone weight is to speak to the seller of the ring. For certain, the .47 sms is not related to the metal quality mark. Please do not base whether or not you buy the ring on my statements here. I have not seen the ring and have very little to work with in formulating this answer.
I hope this helps a little. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
