Ammonia & Polishing Compounds on Sterling Silver: Risks & Solutions

Just to verify with an expert. Will ammonia & water mixture, used after polishing with bobbing and rouge cause .925 to turn yellow/dk.gold? I believe the cause is the piece in question is plated and not .925 sterling. But wanted as said to get an expert opinion. Thank you

sterling will react with ammonia and not a good combination....you will need to polish the item again and use soap in your ultrasonic, there is special solution for silver...to test for 925 silver, drop HCL Acid on the item if its silver it will react by turning a grayish color
