Cracked Silver Ring? Causes, Repair & Authenticity

Question
I have a silver ring that says 925 but the band cracked? Can silver break? How do I know if the silver is real or not?

Answer
Dear Cody,

If the back of the ring's shank is cracked at the center, it is probably the result of a poor-quality past sizing job. It can be easily repaired by a skilled jeweler. Particularly good results are achieved by using a laser for the repair.

Most silver that is stamped "sterling" or "925" is indeed silver. But look inside your crack. You should be able to see if the piece is plated or is a solid metal - likely silver.
