QuestionI was just wondering if it is possible to repair a small rope chain instead of having to replace it. The chain broke in the middle where the tiny links are together. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
AnswerHello, Shawn.
The basic answer is "yes", the small rope chain may be repaired. The repair will either be neat and clean or it will show some, all depending on the chain and the skill of the jeweler.
A very thin chain and one made with hollow links is quite difficult to repair and generally the broken ends will be made even and overlapped and soldered together like that. With solid links, depending on the size of the links it may be possible to cut a link, fit it to the other side and solder the link together. This last method give a seamless repair but is not always possible.
I suggest you take the chain to a jewelers and ask if the chain can be repaired and will it show much or leave much of a stiff spot. Then get the price for doing the work. This will be enough info for you to decide to repair or replace. With gold prices fairly high today, we are repairing much more jewelry and folks are replacing less. All that has to do with price.
Best wishes with getting the chain fixed.
