Identify Your Ring Maker: Decoding Stamps and Markings
Question
ring
Hello-I have a gold ring set with a large amethyst surrounded by 22 seed pearls. I saw another one just like it on Rubylane, but the marks were different. Mine is stamped 'B & Co', 14, and has other symbols I don't understand. I have enclosed a photo, hoping you can help me. I have found a B & Co named Broadway Jewelry/Jewels, and another one that is no longer in business called Birmingham Jewelry. It is of great sentimental value to me. I need to replace some of the missing seed pearls, but want to know if it is fine or costume jewelry so I know whether to buy real seed pearls or if faux ones would serve just as well. Please let me know.
AnswerHello Jane and thank you for your inquiry. I have found no other marks using only B&Co. However, if your ring is precious metal, gold or sterling, it should be marked as such - 14K or other karat, 925 or Sterling. It is very difficult to tell seed pearls and you would need to check with a gemologist for authentication. You could also get your amethyst check at the same time. I would suggest this if that information is important to you and also for possible insurance purposes if you consider this an heirloom. As far as replacement of the seed pearls, you could probably use simulated ones just as well and it would only be "you" that knows !
Hope this helps and enjoy your beautiful ring !
