Identifying Gemstones & Metal Markings on Jewelry - Expert Advice
QuestionOn the back of the mounting... there is a '1/20' ....is that the carat of the stone? Also the mounting has '12k GF' on back. Is there a symbol/mark telling me what stone.... emerald, sapphire, diamond etc ? or is that symbol/mark of the maker .....like a "T&K" combined together to make one symbol/mark. The stone seems to be an emerald (medium dark green) but with a hint of blue in it...maybe a sapphire ??? thank you for you help...Brent
AnswerHello Brent and thank you for your inquiry. the 1/20 is part of the metal content 1/20 12K GF which is gold-filled. The TK is probably the mark of the manufacturer. The only one I have listed in my resources with TK is T. Knoebber Co., in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were active in the 1930's. There is not usually a marking on items identifying the stone. If you believe it is precious you should take it to an appraiser or gemologist for identification. If you have a local antique shop or museum you can ask them to refer you to someone who does jewelry appraisals. Hope this helps and enjoy the necklace !
