Emerald Cut Ruby Ring Value & Authenticity: Is It Real?
QuestionI inherited my grandmothers emerald cut ruby ring. Her son had gotten it for her when he was in the army I think in the late 1950's or early 60's. It is 10K gold and has the letters SA stamped in a box on the inside of the ring. The ruby is fairly large and a beautiful bright red color.
AnswerHi Liesa,
I am sorry to say, it sounds to be a synthetic ruby. 10K gold is less than 50% gold and is a lower grade jewelry than 14 k gold which is the most common grade of jewelry in America. High grade jewelry is 18 k which is 75% gold. This is the type of jewelry you would mount high grade diamonds, rubies, sapphire, emerald etc. 10k is where you find lower grade stones and synthetics. School rings are usually 10k gold for example.
Of course this does not diminish the sentimental value of this ring.
I hope this helps you.
