Repairing a Chip in Gold Plated Jewelry: Advice & Cost

Question
Hi Thomas my question is,  I have a ring given to me by my girlfriend it is 9ct gold plated waves that sit on a stirling silver band. one of the waves on this ring has a very small chip in the gold can you tell me please can this chip be fixed in anyway to repair it or stop it from getin anyworse or will this chip be likely to get any bigger also do you thimk it is worth paying the $ to repair this.

Kind regards

Answer
Garath, if the plate surface of gold is chipped, this is a hard plate with likely another metal beneath it to improve the yellow color. There is a possibility this is a soldered on piece of gold and not a thin plated area.

If plated, there is little hope of repair.  Wear the ring and hope for the best.

If the gold is an applied thin sheet of gold, it is possible a jeweler can solder the broken edge of the gold to mask the chip and help secure the gold.  If the ring is rhodium plated on the silver, repair will not work since discoloration may ruin the ring.  You might have a jeweler take a peek through a microscope and see if this is an applied layer of gold metal or a thin gold plate.   Then, depending on the quote for repair, you may consider it worth it or not.

If the ring is a recent purchase, there is always the chance of returning it for one without damage.

Best Wished. God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
