Authenticating a Vintage Taxco Silver Bracelet: Pre-1948 Hallmark?
QuestionThanks Sally and Bill for your site. Hope you can help me to answer my question. I recently purchased a Taxco bracelet that had only the Hallmark "Taxco Silver" NOT 925 nor anything else. The seller assured me it was a pre-Eagle stamp before 1948. It looks like a truely old piece but I know there are a lot of dishonest folks out there. Most of the hallmarks on the internet when I Googled HALLMARKS had the .925 mark. It is the "BLOCKS" or so called "BRICKS" bracelet. Any help is appreciated ....thank you....Janice in Florida...I can send an image if you need it.
AnswerHello Janice and thank you for your inquiry. According to Billie Hougart's book on Mexican silver the words Taxco and Sterling were used during the first half of the 20th century. Sometimes and maker's initials were used, sometimes not. The eagle mark was established in the 1940's. This mark ceased around 1980 as far as the government was concerned but continued to be used by a few makers. Hope this helps and enjoy your bracelet !
