Finding the Perfect Wedding Dress for Your Figure | Cardiff

Question
Hi - I'm wondering what to do about a wedding dress, as I don't expect to find a gown to fit me easily.  I live in Cardiff, South Wales and I'm a size 14 waist (bigger rather than smaller) and usually a size 16 top as I'm busty at 36G.  Will it be better to get a dress made?  Or to but a skirt and corset?  Will I be able to buy reliable enough underwear to contemplate a strapless top?  Please help!

Many thanks,
Jennie.

Answer
Hi Jennie,
You'll be pleased to hear you are most certainly not alone!

To be honest you will need to try different styles on as it's difficult to tell without seeing you, but I can give you some guidelines and advice which may save you time. Buying a gown can be daunting, especially as you have a bigger bust than most girls.

Firstly, bridal designers in their infinate wisdom seem to cut gowns on the small side. You'll find this more so with high-priced designers and because of your bust, you could go up 3 or 4 sizes. Don't worry about this, it's normal!

Secondly, you CAN wear a strapless number without a bra as most gowns have in-built support. I've found that most big-busted brides do prefer a corset back as this allows for adjustment to add extra support. If you'd really like to wear underwear then go to a reputable lingerie shop who specialise in underwear. They will be able to measure you properly and advise you on the most suitable garments for your needs (which aren't always expensive 'bridal ranges'! Do go for smooth lines, no lace etc that can be seen under your gown or that can peek up from your top.) Thankfully the industry has recognised a need for good, sturdy underwear for bigger busted ladies and there is plenty of choice!
You normally have the option of a modesty panel that can be put behind the lacing to cover any flesh, this allows for underwear. I will say that some styles can give you a 'shelf' so go for a shaped neckline, such as a gentle sweetheart shape. Gowns with straps have lovely sweetheart necklines, as well as scoop shapes and the flattering V shapes (but do make sure they're not plunging, you don't want the vicar passing out!). You'll find the right shape according to your frame, so don't be afraid to experiment.

Try to avoid shoestring straps as these will emphasise your bust, if you'd like straps then go for thicker ones which will also allow for a good bra. Adding straps to a strapless dress can look boxy so if you like a certain style which is strapless, do ask the assistant if they have something similar with straps. Your seamstress can add 2 little straps (like beltloops) on the inside of the straps on the shoulders which can accomodate your bra, one side oppers off and you can then slip it under your bra strap and pop it back on. This stops your bra from creeping into view.

You can buy seperates from some bridal ranges, but these seem to be few and far between. Some bridal companies will also allow you to order a 2 piece in 2 different sizes, so do ask your assistant. The difference between a 2 piece and seperates is that seperates are sold seperately as indivudual pieces and can be mix and match, a 2 piece comes in one size at one price and cannot be sold seperately.

It is rare for a gown to fit a bride perfectly and you may well need a little 'nip and tuck'. Bridal stores will go by your biggest measurement and then alter the gown to fit you.

Go round to your local stores (make an appointment if possible to ensure you recieve personal attention) and have really good try on. Don't be afraid to dig in to the gowns and do ask the sales assistants advice, they are (usually!) specialists and will be able to advise on styles that will suit you. Please do let the assistant help you with the gown, they'll make getting into it easier and fasten it for you. this is YOUR experience, let yourself be pampered! Take your time. If you feel some advice is 'questionable' then do ask the assistant to explain what she means and how she has come about the advice.
If you feel rushed, uncomfortable or just aren't happy with the store/assistants, don't be afraid to leave. A good bridal store will happily give you the time, attention you deserve and be sympathetic of your needs, with no obligation to buy.

I do hope I've helped you with your questions and put you at ease. If you have any more queries then please don't hesitate to ask.

This is where the fun starts. Good luck......and ENJOY YOURSELF!

Kindest Regards
Sarah
