Lithium and Birth Control: Compatibility & Long-Term Effects

Question
We are planning to be married this fall. My fiancee was recently put on lithibid. Now we don't know if she can go on birth control. If so what pill, shot would work? Children are in our future, long term effects of lithibid & birth control?

Answer
I did not want to respond until I look up any recent literature. You can safely use Lithium and birth control pills (any of them) at the same time. There will be no long term effects of the use of lithium and birth control on future children. Don't worry.

Addendum: I don't want to mislead you. Lithium is contraindicated for use DURING pregnancy. It has been known to cause congenital defects and anomalies, including cardiovascular defects. Its use should be avoided during pregnancy, if possible, especially during the period of organogenesis. If you must use Lithium during pregnancy, a level II ultrasound and a fetal echocardiogram at 20 weeks gestation should be done. Use of Lithium at or near term can cause severe toxicity in the newborn, which is usually reversable, however. The long term effects of Lithium use during pregnancy are unknow.  HOwever, the use before you become pregnant or in conjunction with birth control pills is safe.  I hope I have made myself clear. Good luckl
