VBAC After C-Section: Addressing Scar Pain During Pregnancy

Question
HEllo,
I am 38 and have a 3yr old girl. It was an "unnecessary c-sect..long story..was in Italy where c-sect rates are 85% in private clinics where i was.
Now I am 7 mos pregnant ..in theUSA and planning a vbac with a midwife group. They have birthing rooms in a hospital with water tubs , one which has underwater monitering. I am intending on this birth experience.
However, over the past week and half, I have been experiencing burning pains on my right side of my scar..and only the right side. I noticed it first when laying on my right side. I coughed and felt a sharp, burning pain for a moment. I called my midwives and they did not seem alarmed at all. But since I have felt it , not so strong, but felt it when straining, like lifting my daughter, or especially when getting out of a chair and lifting and swinging my right leg out.
I did read a post by a dr on ob/gyn.net. He claimed pain in this area was normal even without a scar. I wanted another opinion, however. I want to be sure it is not a warning sign that I could have a rupture in labor.
Thanks so much for your help
pamela

Answer
Hello Pamela. You can relax- your pain is very common and is either stretching and complaining scar tissue OR a round ligament that is complaining about being stretched. You ARE going in the right direction. Rupture is VERY rare and really only happens when medical drs. use inductions on sectioned women. You are not having an induction. There is one more expert you could contact for your own peace of mind. Her name is Nancy Wainer Cohen and she is the midwife who coined the name VBAC- she has a website in her name and she does answer questions- all the best- Cheri.
