C-Section Incision Healing: What to Expect & When to Worry
QuestionI had c-section for my first and second baby. Second baby was born on 3/26. Few days later, where I had c-section opened up about 1 inch. (Dr. did not put staples, just thread that dissolve later.) So, I went to see the Doctor but one of head nurse (CNP) looked at it by putting q-tips in that area and told me it didn't open up all the way. Then she told me just clean the area with hydrogen peroxide. It's been 3 weeks since I had c-section. Everyday, I wipe the area with Q-tip and clean the area with Hydrogen Peroxide. When I wipe the area I see the yellow color liquid on q-tip. Is it take this long to heal? Looks like the area is closed up but I still see white skin inside and it's been same looking for week or so. What should I do...? Should I go and see the Dr. again...or should I wait...? The nurse told me it is not a infection since I don't have headache and that area looks okay.
AnswerIt is common to have yellow-white discharge from the site ofthe incision and the incision can be separated a bit. This will heal by secondary intention on its own, although it may take awhile for you to be totally healed. The doctor will see you in around six weeks and, by then, the incision should be totally healed. Just keep cleaning the whole incision with hydrogen peroxide and use warm soaks (hold a washcloth that is moistened with hot water over the incision for five minutes at a time) three times a day. This will pull out the serum from the incision if there is some collecion under the skin. Don't worry. It is normal. You do not have to use the Q-tip.
