C-Section Incision Bump: Understanding Potential Causes & Healing

Question
i had a c section on mothers day and it looked like it was healing well, but now there is a big bump in the middle of the incision that is sore and very tender. Any idea what this is? infection? I have been putting peroxide on it.

My doctor says its nothing but i don't think he knows what he's talking about. I've had surgeries before and no incisions have healed like this.

Help!! thank you!

Answer
It sounds like you may be forming a keloid scar, which is an overgrowth of the scar tissue as the incision heals.  These can form unexpectedly, so it's not unusual that this would be your first.  Your doctor has probably ruled out infection because he is looking for red lines that radiate from the incision, combined with fever and malaise.  Peroxide is not needed, and should be avoided on open incisions anyway as it can kill healthy tissue along with dying tissue.  Gentle massage of the incision area as you continue to heal may help limit the keloid growth.  Once you have healed completely, there are a few treatment options you can pursue with your doctor, so be sure to consult with him.
