High Miscarriage Rate at Workplace: Causes & Next Steps
QuestionDr Rappaport,
We have had 14 miscarriages by 9 women in 3 years at work and are growing quite alarmed. The statistics I have seen indicate 15% of confirmed pregnancies end in miscarriage and therefore 93 pregnancies are required for the 14 miscarriages. However, the total female population at work is under 70.
Have you encountered anything like this before and can you recommend next steps? Thanks.
AnswerThe risk of early miscarriage is 15-20% of every pregnancy. If you notice an inordinate number of miscarriages at work, there may be some environmental cause for the miscarriages. YOu did not mention what type of work you do or what exposures are involved at work. HOwever, the number appears quite high. Perhaps an investigation should be started. YOu can contact your local Department of Health and report your suspiciouns.
