Starting Your Barber Career: Working Under Someone After School
QuestionWhat's good Cleao I want to know as a young barber in training after you finish barber school do you have to work under somebody or can you go straight into the game by yourself. And also basically to be a " top notch " barber you basically have to be the best at what you do or the nicest in the shop right?
AnswerWhats good with you? Well let me start by saying I don't think you have to work under someone after barber school being that you are going to school to get your license. in some cities such as where I am from there are no Barber schools so what people have to do is work in a shop under a Master Barber for two years and thats how they get there licenses thats the only reason you would have to work under a another barber. In life what ever you do if you like to do it you want to strive for greatness there is no such thing as perfect but progress is more like it I have been cutting for 12 years and still learning new things and I love it! But to answer your question yes you have to be the best at what you do and be the nicest in the shop, and once you have developed your own style of cutting you should work own your speed. Speed is a must in a busy barber shop one reason is to get the clients in and out so they will come back, the next is to get the most money. As long as the cuts are up to par speed is a must. I'll give you an example of speed. Sundays our shop is open, but I normally do not work on Sundays. One of our barbers was there alone and he said if it got too busy he will call. Anyways he ended up calling me at home so I went to work for 1 hour. I cut 3 heads. A fade with shave, a low Caesar, and a brush cut with a shave in about 45 mins if that! and they all was sharp. The key to being a good barber is quality cuts, good communication, friendliness to customers, and speed. One last thing I wanted to mention most black people and Spanish people look for sharp edgeups thats what they look for in a good cut. so set your blades to cut sharp if you don't know how ask me. Do you work in a shop now? Well holla at me if you need any thing else answered or just want to chat about cutting I got all types of info and "old barber secrets" lol
