Navigating Stroke Recovery Caregiving: A Guide for New Caregivers

Question
I am a C.A. for a doctor who, a month ago, suffered a stroke. We will be closing the office and I will be taking over as daily care-giver. I have worked with the disabled in the past, but never in this circumstance. I am struggling because in his eyes he is ok and ready to return to work. It is obvious that if he is to return to work it will not be for months. Every day is a battle of him still trying to be my boss, and me trying to nicely convince him he is not ready and should trust me. I would love some advise on how to properly communicate with him, respectful yet as a leader, not an employee, as he still views me. Thank you so much for your time! I look forward to your response!!

Answer
Hi Ashley,

I think you need to remind him "I am here to provide your care as your recuperate and you need to listen to me and work with me if you want to get better sooner".  Maybe you can also meet with his physician and PTs/OTs on the side (confidentially) and discuss strategies for you to work together (you and his health care providers) to convince your employer/patient that he needs to work WITH you as he recovers because all the strength he expends arguing is energy wasted which should be directed towards his recovery.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best,
Margot
