LEEP & Pregnancy: Should You Trust Your Doctors on Cerclage?

Question
Hi, I had a LEEP about 4 yrs ago. I am now pg w/ twins. I have seen a perinatologist and am seeing my regular OB. Both of them agree that a cerclage is not nessacary at this point. After doing much research I feel I really need this. Should I just go along with what they say or consult another high-risk OBGYN? By the way, I have 2 children from before the LEEP that were carried to term. thanks

Answer
Dear Malea,

You should not need a cerclage simply by virtue of having a previous LEEP procedure. The only time you would really need this "automatically" is if they had removed an extraordinarily large amount of cervical tissue.

I'm sure they will keep your cervical history in mind as your pregnancy progresses and may do a vaginal scan at around 20 weeks. If the cervix shows signs of shortening or opening at that point, they would likely consider the cerclage appropriate then.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
