QuestionThank you so much for your response to my last email. I took another home pregnancy test on Monday the 13th it showed up positive. It was a very faint positive. So, I repeated the test the following morning. It was the same, positive but very faint. It was so faint that I really had to look at the test. I called my obgyn and told her what was going on. She sent me in for a blood test asap. It came back negative. It is now Saturday night the 19th. I still have not started my period. Is this uncommon for women to skip their periods.? I am very regular and have always been like clock work. The only times I have ever been late were when I was pregnant. Is it possible that the blood test could have been wrong? Their has got to be a reson for not starting. I am just so confused. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. -------------------------

I am 26 years old. I have three children. And the 1st day of my last period was May 14th. I had a tubal ligation done after the birth of my 3rd child in april of 2003. I am usually very regualar with my periods. I should have started June 10th or the 11th. I took a pregnancy test on the 12th..it was negative. I sill have not started. I have had a watery discharge since Friday the 11th. Could that mean anything? I have had some nausea with heartburn in the early mornings and last week I was extreamly tired. What are the chances I could be pregnant even though I had a tubal done over a year ago and not to mention a negative home pregnancy test?
Answer -
If your last period started on May 14, then you would have ovulated around May 28. YOu, therefore, could only have conceived if you had unprotected sex on May 27,28,29, or 30. YOu could not have become pregnant on any other day of the month. In addition, a tubal ligation is 99% effective against pregnancy, so it is highly unlikely that you are pregnant. A pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days after conception, so if you ovulated around May 28, a pregnancy test would not be positive until 10-17. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after you miss your period. If you hage any doubts, or if you do not get your period by June 17, repeat the test.
AnswerThe manufacturers of all home pregnancy tests claim that the test cannot be considred positive unless the lines are dark and bold. A faint line is considered to be a negative test. HOwever, even though blood pregnancy tests are more accurate, they have been known to be erroneous, from time to time. The best time to take a pregnancy test (as I have mentioned to you previously) is seven days after you miss your period. Since your last period was March 14, you were due for your period on June 10. The best time for the pregnancy test would have been on June 17. I would suggest, now, that you take two boood pregnancy tests (quantative Beta HCG), 48 hours apart. If you are pregnant, there will be a rise (usually doubling in 48 hours). If you miscarried, there will be a drop in 48 hours. If you were never pregnant, the test will show a value of <5. If this test is negative, and you have not gotten your period by July, have your doctor induce your period for you using Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days and you should get your period within 10 days.
