QuestionHi Dr. Rappaport,
I am a 30 year old mother of 4 children. My question for you is; In July of 2001, I had a tubal ligation for obvious reasons. Here it is almost 4 years later, & I am concerned because I have not yet started my period this month. I know this sounds crazy, but I really haven't kept exact records of when my periods start & stop because I felt I could not get pregnant. I know I am approximately 2 weeks late. Is there a possiblity of me being pregnant? Also, Is it true when you are or become pregnant that the labia & surrounding ares will sometimes appear to be bluish in color? I normally have certain thing that happen to me right before I start, for example, breast tenderness, light-headedness, headaches, & water weight. I have not had any of these symptoms as of yet. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
AnswerIf you are two weeks late for your period, the first thing you have to rule out is pregnancy. It is very doubtful that you could have conceived after a tubal ligation, but stranger events have occurred. If the tubal ligation was performed incorrectly, or if the tube "recanalized" it is possible for the sperm to meet the egg. Take a pregnancy test at this time. If it is negative, you are not pregnant. During pregnancy, the cervix has a bluish tint to it, as does the vagina, but not the labia.
