Medications During Pregnancy: Safety Guide for Common Concerns

Is it safe to take loratadine (Claritin) while pregnant? What about Tylenol? Thank you for your time.


Answer
We do not advise taking any antihistamines during pregnancy (Claritin is an antihistamine). We also do not adivse taking ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Anaprox, etc). However, you can take Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol, or Tylenol with codeine during pregnancy without any worry. Sometimes, for severe itching or for an allergic reaction, we will use Benadryl (another antihistamine) to control the itching or as a mild sedative. Check with your doctor as to his or her preferences.
