Preparing for Birth: Optimal Timing & Breathing Techniques for Expectant Parents
QuestionHello,
I am 26 years old and approximately 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby. My husband and I are interested in taking birth classes, which are offered locally in 6-week sessions, as well as some type of breathing class (Lamaze or other). My first question is, when is a good time to take the classes? We don't want to take them too early, but certainly don't want to wait too late. Also, do you have any advice on choosing a breathing method? I would very much like to try a natural birth, and keep hearing that Lamaze is still the best. Thank you! Your comments are appreciated.
AnswerBreathing classes and childbirth preparation classes are usually begun in your last trimester of pregnancy. It is too soon to take them now. Lamaze is still the best, but any psychoprophylaxis method will be helpful. Usually, even if you have not had any classes, the L&D nurses are quite helpful during labor.
