Understanding Total Placenta Previa & Abortion Options

Question
Hi I am around 13 weeks pregnant and was just diagnosed with a total placenta previa.I do not want to endure any of the risks that are involved with this condition so my husband and i have determined that terminating would be for the best since i have other children to think about.I have heard that placentas can migrate but mine is total so im not really willing to see if this would change.I also have had major bleeding episodes earlier in the pregnancy but at taht time they said that it was from a subchorionic bleed. So now I have 2 of these potentially fatal things going on and i dont want to risk my life for the sake of my other children. My question is would terminating be safe to do at this point with previa?I know they say you cannot deliver vaginally with this so wouldnt that be the same for termination or am i wrong? I have inquired about it from my gynecologist and he doesnt seem to think a regular termination would be unsafe.I have had a termination many years ago at the same place i inquired about this to.They said they will check and see if they think it can be done and have an appointment on tuesday. He said he doesnt see why he couldnt but he will check an ultrasound and see what he finds and what the outcome will be?Also one more thing, being i was diagnosed that early with a COMPLETE previa what are the odds it would still be that way as i  get farther into the pregnancy.I know I have heard of them migrating but i seen for partial and marginal but wasnt sure of the total.

Answer
Even complete placenta previa can migrate away from the cervix (it usually does) and disappears comploetely. There is no reason to terminate a pregnancy due to a previa at 13 weeks gestatioion. If the previa does not move away from the cervix, a cesarean section will be done when the baby is mature (37-38 weeks). If you really want to terminate the pregnancy, it can easily be done like any other early abortions. There may be a bit more blood but not really that much, since it is still very small.  The bleeding you had due to a subchroionic bleed has nothing to do with the placenta previa and does not interfere with the pregnancyl. I would suggest that you repeat a sonogram at 24 weeks to see if you still have a placenta previal. I would not terminate the pregnancy due to a placenta previa. It should not cause any problems except that you may need a cesarean section.
