Postpartum Bleeding: When to Seek Medical Advice

Question
I had my daughter on January 13, 2008. I had a very normal vaginal delivery from which I am still still and it has already been two months. I can go a whole day without bleeding but the next morning the bleeding returns. Is this normal? What can I do to stop the bleeding?

Answer
This is definitely not normal. I recommend you schedule an appointment with your medical caregiver as soon as you can. The bleeding may be related to the birth, or it may be related to a more systemic problem. Either way, such frequent and chronic bleeding does need to be checked.  As for stopping the bleeding, that all depends on what is causing it. If it is just because your hormones are still off-balance, getting on hormonal birth control may help. If you're into holistic medicine, evening primrose oil and a high-soy diet may also help if this is the problem. However, if it is because your blood is having trouble clotting, this would need to be treated with medications that specifically addresses that problem.

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
