Measuring Large in Pregnancy: Understanding Fetal Growth & Due Dates
Question Good morning! I'm pregnant with my second child and have been given a due date of May 7th. However, at each OB appt., the doctor makes reference to the fact that I'm measuring larger than my due date. I had an ultrasound in December and confirmed that a) there's only one baby and b) my fluid levels are fine. I also know that I don't have gestational diabeties. My first child was 10lbs. 12oz./22 inches so a big baby is certainly a possibility (although I'm not a big person). However, I still have a few months to go but I feel like I did at the END of my first pregnancy. So, my questions are these: 1. Are there other reasons someone might "measure big"? What questions should I ask my doctor? 2. If a woman has a large baby, what are the possible dangers/complications to the baby and/or mother?
I've looked in a million places hoping to find this topic, but I can't find it anywhere!
Sincerely,
Katie Kough
AnswerHI Katie,
it is really unknown what causes the babies to get big, unless there is a history of diabetes. Really to find out why, you would need to go to a genetics counselor and run special tests that cost alot ofmoney, but sometimes are wasted if unconclusive. There really is very little information unless you have a diagnosis, so question him about the baby and see if you can come up with a diagnosis or something you cam look up.
