Understanding Normal Pap Smear Results After ASCUS

Question
Hi ,
I received my pap smears results normal but 4 months ago it was ASCUS i dont know why but it was now 4 months later it normal can you explain why obgyn said no lesion no infections looks good there so we retested and NORMAL IT WAS ALOT OF STRESS AND WORRING FOR NOTHING  thank you

Answer
A PAP smear is a test for cervical cancer. By looking at the cells of your cervix, we can see if there is any changes in the cells that lead to cancer. The spectrum is as follows: Normal, ASCUS (atypical squamous cells of undetermined origin), LSIL(low grade squamous intrepithelial lesion), HSIL (high grade squamous intrapethelial lesion), CIS (carcinoma-in-situ), Cancer.  ASCUS is the lowest abnormality. It just means that the view under the microscope was "atypical" and it was of undetermined significance. That means it could have been normal. We usually repeat the PAP smear in 3-6 months and if it reverts back to a normal PAP, we ignore the previous PAP. Don't worry.
