Pre-eclampsia & Pneumonia: Understanding Risks & Induction Decisions
Questionmy granddaughter has been in the hospital for 2 days with preclampsia and pnueima? and they have induced labor she is very sick blood pressure still elevated. how are we to know when the mother is too sick to give birth naural because of being very weak. She is due Jan 5 and is only getting worse as time passes why are they waiting
AnswerIf your grand-daughter is due on January 5, she is now only 35 weeks pregnant. The baby's lungs are not really mature until, at least, 36 weeks gestation. That is probably why they are waiting. If she has pre-eclampsia she is probably on Magnesium sulfate therapy and on bed rest. If her liver function tests, platelets, and blood pressure are stablized she can safely wait for the baby to mature a little more. If there is any doubt in her doctor's minds, they will deliver her earlier. I'm sure that she is being monitored. If necessary, she can have a cesarean section, but it is better if she delivers vaginally. She can do that even if she is weak. Don't worry. If she is in the hospital, I'm sure that everyone is being very careful with her and the baby.
