PAP Smears After Hysterectomy: Understanding the Necessity

Question
My wife had a complete hysterectomy 3 years ago (no cervix left) and her OB/GYN insists she still take a PAP smear. We thought this test was only for detection of cervical cancer, and since there is no cervix, we are suspicious of overcharging. Can you tell us what this test is for in post-hysterectomy women?

Answer
Dear Mr. Gessner,

You ask a very valid question and I will try to the best of my knowledge to answer it. One reason that her OB/GYN maybe insisting on your wife continuing with her PAP smear's is that she HAD cervical cancer. And once you have "cervial cancer" they like to keep up with your cervix area even though you do not have a cervix. You can also get a second opinion as well and you can go to www.cancer.gov to look up why a OB might want to keep testing for cancer when the cervix is gone. Again I want to remind you I am a cervical cancer survivor "not a doctor" so please get a professional opinion on this matter.

God Bless you and your Family
