Acne Medication During Pregnancy: Risks and Safe Alternatives

Question
I am four months pregnant and have been having acne breakouts. My dermatologist perscribed me Benzaclin. I have been using it, but just read that it is possible it may harm the developing baby. Do you know if this is possible and should I stop using it, and is there anything I should do to makek sure my baby is safe and unharmed?

Answer
I am not familiar with Benzaclin. However, if it contains Retin-A (which is used for acne) you should not use it because Retin-A is harmful to a growing fetus. Ask your dermatologist about the safety of the medication. I have looked at my reference books but have not found Benzaclin mentioned, so I can't advise you of its safety.
