Acetone Exposure During Pregnancy: Risks & Precautions for Beauticians

I have just found out that I am 4 / 5 weeks pregnant and I work as a Beautician, and with that I use alot of Acetone and was just woundering weather or not I should wear a mask whilst using such a product.

Can you help me?

Hello Lisa,

You probably should do all you can to avoid the chemicals used for hair and nails.  I'm not sure which ones are harmful and which ones aren't, but I remember as a rule that anything that gives off a smell and is a chemical should be avoided.  I would definately wear a mask.  I would also talk to my OB/GYN and find out what other things you may need to do.  I had a friend who also worked as a beautician and her doctor told her not to do anything with chemicals or be around them.  I think she ended up taking a really early maternity leave, but again, this could be extreme and I would ask my doctor.
