Pregnancy and Maternal Blood: What Changes Occur?

Question
Assuming a woman is impregnated, and giving no thought to the baby and assuming no sexually transmitted disease,  is the blood of the female in any way permantly changed in any way by reason of the father's pregnation?

Answer
The mother's blood does not change at all.  However, if the mother has Rh Negative blood and the father has Rh Positive blood, the fetus may have Rh positive blood. If so, the mother may produce antibodies in her blood due to the "foreigh" Rh positive blood of the baby. These sntibodies can cross the placenta and destroy the growing fetus (erythroblastosis fatalis or "blue baby syndrome"). For this reason, if you are Rh negative and the father of the baby is Rh Positive, you will be given a shot of RhoGam (Rh immune globulin) to prevent formation of antibodies. In any event, your blood never changes and remains as you were born for your entire life.
