Postpartum Hemorrhage: Understanding Severe Bleeding After Childbirth

Question
Hi. I had to go to the emergency room today due to hemmoraging. I gave birth 10 weeks ago and had been bleeding constantly along with passing large clots. I was continually told it was an irregular period. Today the bleeding was so excessive it soaked through layers of towels and clothing in a matter of minutes. My blood pressure and blood work were normal according to the doctor. They did not do an exam, although I am scheduled for an ultrasound in a couple of days. I have been put on progesterone as they think it's some sort of hormonal imbalance. Is this common after pregnancy? I am now experiencing heavy clotting and cramping. How long will the progesterone take before this goes away? Is this hormonal imbalance only because of the pregnancy? Thank you for your time and help.

Answer
Either the cause of the bleeding and cramps is due to a hormonal imbalance (which will be treated by the progesterone) or it is due to some retained placental fragments in the uterus or some other retained products of conception. A sonogram will immediately be able to see if there is any tissue left inside the endometrial cavity. If so, you may need a D&C to remove the remnants or tissue and the bleeding will stop.
