Epidural Complications: Postpartum Heart Issues & Blood Pressure Drops
QuestionI had an epidural. This is my 5th child. She is now 5 weeks and healthy. However, I do not feel like I normally do after delivery. My heart seems to be beating irregularly, and I notice my heart rate more. I did have a very big drop in blood pressure during my labor. My husband noticed the alrams, the nurse noticed, but I think she thought it was a false alarm. I wasn't able to even speak (even though I thought I was talking). Eventually the nurse realized what was happening and gave me a shot of ephidran (sp?). My blood pressure came back up and I felt a lot better. Could this have anything to do with my symptoms?
AnswerI doubt that any irregular heartbeat that you have five weeks after the epidural would have any relation to the epidrual. If you continue to have irregular heartbeats, I would suggest that you get an EKG and a cardiac evaluation. By now, all of the epidural medication is out of your body. Sometimes, during an epidural, your blood pressure can drop and ephedron certainly can be used to raise it back to normal. It is a common occurrence. If you have any doubts, get a full checkup.
