Marina IUD Complications & Removal: A Patient's Experience
QuestionI had a Marina IUD inserted in February 2003 and in June of 2004 had a lapirascopy surgery done to remove it from my abdomen since it had perforated through my uterus and decided to become embedded between my intestines on the left side, which they said was very dangerous. They inserted another Marina IUD while I was in surgery and it is still in place. Both times they inserted the IUD they had to dilate my cervix and said it was still very difficult to insert. My question is when I have it removed what are the chances that they will have to dilate my cervix to remove it? Also what do you think my chances are of having it perforate through my uterus a second time?
AnswerHi Nicole,
I really don't think it will perforate again, just make sure they keep check on it and if it should move again, that they know it and find out promptly where it is. Also since they need to dilate once, they still may dilate always because of the trouble you are having. It could also be as a protective measure to avoid doing any other damage if they didnt' dilate it.
