Understanding Cervical Funneling in Late Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Question
I am 30 weeks pregnant and considered high risk for pre-term labor.  My 1st was 5 weeks early.  I have been getting my cervical length checked every 2 weeks.  This week I was told that there was "slight funneling".  What does this mean and does this put me more at risk for an early labor?

Answer
Dear Justine,

Slight funneling means that the internal os (the inside rim) of your cervix is beginning to dilate a bit. It MAY be an indicator of the higher risk of pre-term labor for you, but many women have some slight funneling at 30-34 of pregnancy and their cervix remains closed and they go on to carry to at least the 37 week point. It doesn't necessarily put you at MORE risk. It is something they will note and keep an eye on.

It sounds like they are watching you close. They will pick up any major changes for which you should start to prepare yourself right away.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well!
