Low Progesterone in Early Pregnancy: Causes, Risks & Treatment
QuestionHi. I am pregnant with my third child. To make a long story short, we conceived our first child with the help of Gonal-F and an HIUI. We conceived or second child without the fertility assistance. This pregnancy also was conceived without fertility treatment. I am 4 1/2 weeks pregnant, so I just found out! However, my progesterone level came back today as a 16.2. According to the nurse, they like it to be at 25. They are starting me on a progesterone shot, suppositories and an oral progesterone tomorrow morning. I have read that it has been found that the progesterone supplements have no effect on stabilizing a pregnancy unless they are started post ovulation. Basically, I would like to know what my chances are. Are we looking at a probable miscarriage here?
AnswerStephanie,
I really wish I could tell you what you want to hear, but I don't know if you will miscarry or not. I have not heard that progesterone does anything other than help you maintain a pregnancy regardless of when it is started. I think you should dicuss all of your concerns with your OB doctor. They know your history and can give you more detailed answers. Good luck!
