Preconception Checkup: Why an OBGYN Visit Before Pregnancy Matters

Question
I am 27 and my husband and I have decided to try for our first
child.  When I told my friend she was horrified that I didnt intend
going to see an OBGYN before trying to get pregnant. She said
that I need to be checked over beforehand to make sure
everything is good.  I am in really good health and very rarely
see a doctor.  My mom said that she didnt see a doctor with any
of her pregnancies.

How important is this visit, would you recommend it and what
sort of things would be checked on?

Thanks

Answer
There is no reason that you would need to have a "preconceptual" gyn exam. If you are in good health, you can start trying to conceive. YOu may wish to start some antenatal vitamins as you try to conceive. Otherwise, nothing else must be done. If you have a normal 28 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs around cycle day #14. YOu can only become pregnant if you have unprotected sex on cycle day #13, 14, 15, or 16, each month. Try concentrating on having intercourse on those days each month and you should not have any difficulty in conceiving. A pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days after conception. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period. Once you have a positive pregnancy test, you should make your first Obstetrical appointment at 8 weeks after the first day of your last period. Good Luck.
