First Prenatal Visit: What to Expect During the Initial Exam

Question
Hello-
First, I want to Thank You for giving your time to provide medical knowledge to people who have concerns or after-thoughts regarding their pregnancy and/or other medical concerns or questions only an educated health professional would be able to answer. QUESTION:
When the doctor, or nurse in this case, preforms the initial vaginal exam when you are pregnant (basically your annual pap smear), is it normal to have a fair amount of blood visible upon the removal of the medical "clamp"? Would the nurse then tell you that you may have spotting throughout the day and only for this day? I was wondering if this was a normal occurance during this procedure when you are pregnant.
I have never seen blood when this instrument has been removed for the last 20 years I have been for my annual pap smear. Where/What would cause you to have blood visible (and a fair amount) dripping down the medical clamp after removal of this device when you are pregnant vs. when you are not?
Thank you for your reply. I hope my question was described clearly enough for you to provide an answer.
Respectfully,

Amber

Answer
Dear Amber,

When you're pregnant, there's an increase in the blood supply and blood flow to your cervix as compared to when you are not pregnant. So it is not unusual for women to experience spotting after contact to this area, such as after sexual intercourse or a pelvic exam. This type of light bleeding in pregnancy is not abnormal and nothing to be overly alarmed about.

As long as the bleeding does not increase in volume, become accompanied by severe cramping, contain tissue or clots, and dissipates in a day or so, then you can rest easy.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
