Understanding Unilateral Renal Agenesis in Pregnancy: A Doctor's Perspective

Question
Iam 35 and in my 33-week of pregnancy. I had an amnio which was ok and a 22-week scan which was also fine. When I had my Doppler the previous week, one doctor thought that the baby's left kidney was too small, whereas another doctor said that there wasn't a left kidney, just a tissue. My gynaecologist told me not to worry, because even with one kidney the baby is fine. He referred me to a specialist in two weeks to have another scan. Could both doctors be wrong? Why did the doctor who conducted the first scan (22weeks) said there were two kidneys? Can a kidney remain undetected?- the fetus is a boy

Answer
Remember that sonogram scans are merely sound wave echoes and are, sometimes, difficult to interpret. One technician may believe he sees kidneys while another believes the echo is not a kidney. Both doctors could have been incorrect in their interpretation. Just repeat the scan and see what it shows. In any case, at your stage of pregnancy, the baby will be delivered soon and can be examined properly once it is in the nursery. Don't worry for now.
