Understanding Kidney Dilation During Pregnancy: Causes & Outlook

Question
I'm 23, I had my 20 week ultrasound today, and during it, the doctor noticed that the left kidney was dilated. He's sending the measurements of the kidney to a specialist, and I have to have another ultrasound with the specialist to determine the severity. Should I be worried? The doctor told me that odds are that it'll go away, but I'm really nervous and sick thinking about it. Is it really serious?

Answer
Very often, during pregnancy, the kidney can show evidence of dilatation. Usually, this is not significant and the next time you take a sonogram it will measure fine. I would worry at this time, as long as you have enough amniotic fluid around the baby. When the kidney is not functioning, there will not be any amniotic fluid formed and this is easily noticed on sonogram. Don't worry.
