IUD & Pregnancy: Understanding Risks & Unexpected Pregnancies

Question
I have an IUD, mirena. I picked this birth control because I have two kids and my husband and I don't want any more children. Our youngest however was conceived because I got sick and took antibiotics while using the nuvaring and a month later I got a positive pregnancy test, surprise! I haven't had a period in months but during Christmas I had a light five day period. My Mom was staying with us and was on her cycle. I got sick a few days later and my doctor gave me a zpak. A week and a few days later I had an hour of cramping which I think was ovulation. Now I have every pregnancy symptom under the sun and I am wondering if it's possible that I could be pregnant? My husband is convinced that I am. And if I am what does this mean? Will I miscarry?

Answer
Dear Salina

Pregnancy is a possibility. However; the symptoms you described of cramping, light 5 days period on an IUD is either suggests a threatened abortion or more seriously an ectopic pregnancy which is commoner when an IUD is in place. Some other possibilities-not pregnancy- are also possible depending on your age.

Therefore an examination of pelvic ultrasound is mandatory to either show the nature of your pregnancy and/or demonstrate the possibility of any other organic pelvic lesion.

Good Luck
