Low HCG Levels & Early Pregnancy Bleeding: What Could It Mean?

Question
-------------------------
Followup To the date of conception would be may 14 or 15. if im not pregnant what could make me have an elevated hcg?
Question -
I am 25 and have i have a  19 month old daughter. my first pregnancy was uneventful. know i know i am pregnant again, about 7 weeks. but my hcg levels havent risen above 50 and know around the time i would have had a period this month, im experiencing bleeding. but the blood is watery and light. and no real discomfort. my periods are always heavy and dark. i am also feeling strange movements in my lower abdomin. like a baby kicking. i know it would be way to soon to feel that, but i remember what that feels like and even when i put my hand on the places i feel it, i can feel on the outside as well. my question is, can i still be pregnant with such low hormones, and do you think im miscarring? please let me know.
Answer -
I can't tell from your description exactly how far pregnant you really are, since you did not mention when the first day of your last period was. However, if you are having some bleeding, I would suggest that you take two blood tests for pregnancy (Beta HCG) 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a viable pregnancy. If there is a halving in 48 hours, it indicates a miscarriage. At seven weeks gestation, HCG value should be greater than 100,000. Make sure that you do not do a pregnancy test until you are a full three weeks from the date of suspected conception. It is doubtful that you are pregnant with such low values as 50.

Answer
As I mentioned before, an HCG value of less than 5 is a negative test. However, an HCG of 50 is very low, although positive. If your last period started on May 14, you would now be 5 weeks 4 days getational age. At 5 weeks, an HCG value should range from 850 - 20,800. Therefore, you may have been pregnant and miscarried, and the HCG value is dropping. There is also the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. In any event, further evaluation is necessary, including (at some point) a sonogram of your pelvis. For now, I still would repeat the HCG test twice, 48 hours apart to see if there is a doubling, halving, or plateau of the results, and discuss it with your gynecologist.
