Endometrial Ablation: Understanding Uterine Lining Removal
QuestionAge: 35
Children: None
Last Period: May 28
In high school, I read a book about a self-help in-clinic procedure that allows a woman to have her uterus scraped of its lining so that she does not have to deal with the discomfort and inconvenience of having her period. The menstruation process that would have taken days to complete would be over in a matter of minutes.
Is this procedure safe? Is it even available now and how do you feel about it?
Answer"Endometrial Ablation" is a safe procedure, but it is not used for women who merely want to avoid menstruation. It is a treatment for women who have excessive bleeding with their periods (menorrhagia) or bleeding throughout the month (menometrorrhagia). In women with this abnormal uterine bleeding, by destroying the endometrial lining of the uterus, there is no longer any period. It can be done with electrocautery, heat, or hot fluids. There are complications and side effects in every procedure and if it is not indicated, it should not be attempted.
