Post-Aspiration Period Changes: What to Expect & When to Seek Advice

Question
QUESTION: Hi Dr. Joan. I went to Early Options in NYC and had the aspiration procedure about 7 weeks ago. I got my first period about 5 weeks after the procedure. It was normal and everything but then after it was over and went away for 2 or 3 days its seems to be back again. I have cramps and am spotting. It seems to feel like a whole new period is coming. I did not get on any birth control pills after but I am wondering now if maybe I should....Is this normal? What do you suggest I do? Thank you so much. OH and by the way my experience at EarlyOptions was really a very good one considering the situation.

ANSWER: Dear Jessica,
I am happy to hear you went to Early Options.  It is the best doctor's office to get an early abortion.  The bleeding you are having sounds completely normal.  However, if you are having persistent cramping you should come in for an evaluation.  If they are period-like cramps, that respond to motrin (800mg), then you don't need to come in.  If the cramps do not respond to motrin and persist, you should come in and be checked.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your fast response. What I am feeling now is more of an ache in my lower back and a little in the front. It is more of a tight feeling and I am actually wondering if I might have pulled something and its not related to the spotting. I am not in a lot of pain or anything and the spotting I am having is very minimal. I also have been a little constipated (which isn't unusual for me) and am going to get some stool softners and see if maybe that will help my discomfort too. But I will pay attention to what I am feeling and if anything gets worse I will call. I felt so good post abortion and all the way up until this so I am a little surprised by all of this. I wanted to ask one more thing and that is if I can get the birth control there at Early Options. When I was there before I didn't think I wanted to be on it but now I changed my mind and was wondering if I can get it. Thank you again so so much. EarlyOptions has been wonderful to me.
from, Jessica

Answer
Hi Jessica,
This all sounds normal, but if it continues you should definitely call the office.  We have started doing $50 birth control visits. This usually includes a free sample, so it really pays for itself.  So, if you want to schedule an apopintment, you can have her evaluated everything and get your started on birth control
