Dark Blood Discharge: Causes, Symptoms & When to See a Doctor

Question
I'm a 25 year old female with no children, nor am I pregnant. My last menstrual period started on July 25th. I get my period every 28 days and yet I saw blood yesterday. I went to the hospital and while I waited I started to get a little discomfort in my ovarian area which isn't unusual when I get my period. But the difference this time is that the blood was dark. The doctor at the ER told me there was nothing wrong in my blood work and that I should just go home and accept the fact that it's my period. I did stop taking my Tri-Nessa b.c pills a week ago and I'm wondering if that would cause this blood flow. If not than what should I do next? What could this possibly be?

Answer
If you stopped the birth control pills a week ago, it is normal to start vaginal bleeding (a breakthrough bleed from cesation of hormones). It can be darker blood. You may also be ready for ovulation (since you are no longer on the pill). Ovulation may explain the pain you had in the area of your ovary. Why did you stop the pill? Are you trying to become pregnant. If so, wait to see if you get your next peeriod. YOu do not have to do anything else. If you do not want to become pregnant, you should start another form of birth control. For now, merely keep a careful record of all bleeding for the next month or two.
