VBAC After Two Cesarean Sections: What You Need to Know
QuestionIs it possible to have a vaginal birth after 2 previous c-sections? I haven't seen much information on it. I wanted a vbac after the first, but my OB physician heavily pressured me not to because of the size of the next baby, 9 lbs. 14 oz. I'm considering the another pregnancy, and would like to deliver vaginally. My first child was vaginal. Please advise as to the possibility.
AnswerIf you have not delivered vaginally since having a cesarean section, the method of delivery of the next baby will be based on whether the same situation occurs at the time of delivery, the size of the baby, etc. The risk of uterine rupture after a cesarean section is 1%. With each successive cesarean section, the risk increases. In addition, every time you have a cesarean, the bladder is tacked up higher and higher, making entry into the abdomen difficult. ACOG recommends that you have repeat cesarean section if the estimated fetal weight is over 9.5lbs. Finally, many obstetricians will not offer VBAC after two cesarean sections and you will have to search for a doctor that will allow you to have one.
